Custom Google maps are very helpful to showcase specific locations without any sort of trouble or requirements. If you want to add your business location in Google maps then you have to go through some verification process, however, there are no such requirements when adding a location in custom maps.

It is a handy tool when you require to showcase several distinct locations in your article as you simply cannot use Google business maps for this purpose. For example, if your blog post is about hiking in mountains in China. Then you need to describe from where the journey should begin & where it will end. You may need to mark some point of interest on the maps, estimated duration by walking or cycling.

You cannot fully describe just by writing some text, you need to pinpoint the location on the maps. And exactly for this reason, Google custom is very helpful.

Best use of custom Google maps

Custom Google map is best to pinpoint a location informally on the maps. If you need to add your business location then do not use this feature, as it does not provide a verified location. Thus, it will not be trustworthy to your clients & your reputation may suffer.

It is best for pinpointing a location more casually. You can use it in your blog post, articles, research papers, or magazine about temporary business outlets, disaster location, interesting places to discover, etc.

So, let’s get started on how you can create custom Google maps in simple 5 steps.

Step 1: Open Google maps & find the location

Before you begin, you need to login into your Google account. After that visit, Google maps & find the location either by typing the location name or find it manually by using your mouse.

For this instance, let us assume your desired location is New York City. Here we will add a custom location on the map. To do that, first, click on the 3 parallel lines at the left corner of the map to open the Google maps menu.

Step 2: Create a new custom map

Here you can see all the options to choose from. For this purpose, I want you to click on the “Your Places” option.

If you created a custom map before then it will show here.

It will open your private area in Google maps. Click on the “Maps” tab. If you have created any custom maps before then they would appear under this tab. To create a new custom map, click on the “Create map” option at the bottom of the tab.

Click on the Untitled map & rename it.

Step 3: Give a name of your new blank custom map

It will open a new map of the same location. Look at the left side of the screen, “Untitled map” click here to edit the name.

In the “map title” give a name for your new custom map. It is not the name of your location, just the name of your entire custom map. Though if you want you can name it on your business or location.

Step 4: Add a custom location on the map using a marker

Now it is time to add your custom location on the map. To do that, click on the “marker” icon from the tab and place it on your desired location.

You can add location marker anywhere on the map. Click on the description box to give it some details.

Here 2 important things to do.

Choose your icon & color of the marker from the left side option.

Type the name of the marker & add a description as well.

They have many custom icons to choose from, select one that best describes your purpose.

You can mark as many locations as you want. These marked location can be seen no matter how many times you zoom out.

I have added another marker to give you an example of how it looks like on the map. The good thing is even if you scroll up to the top still your added markers can be seen clearly on the map. It will get bigger in proportion to the size of maps.

That’s it, congratulations. You have done it.

Share your newly created Google custom map to 3rd parties or blog.

Step 5: Share your custom map or embed it on your site

Now you can share it just like Google Docs with another person. To do that click on the “share” option.

Just like sharing a Google doc you can share your custom map to others.

Now select the “Anyone with the link” option so whoever has this link can see your custom map without needing to login to their Google account. It is an easy option for everyone, they will just click on your link & take a quick look at the location, with no hassle of login whatsoever.

Click on the preview button to see your new custom map

This is how it looks to 3rd person. On the left side of the screen, you can see the details of your location name & description. On the map, your new location markers can be seen clearly no matter how many times it zooms out.

Click on embed on my site to get a HTML source code

Finally, if you want to embed this custom Google map in your blog post or webpage then click on the 3 dotted option on the top of the left side. Open the menu & click on the “Embed on my site” option.

use this HTML code to embed your custom map on your article or webpage.

Now copy & paste this HTML source code on your blog post or webpage where you want to show it. That’s it, you have done it.

Custom Google maps are very easy to create & very useful for casual purposes. Like I said before, if you need to add your business location then do not use this feature. As it will not be going to provide any sort of verification.
